What man doesn’t dream of having his own space where he can unwind and enjoy his favorite things like long hours on video games, watching his favorite sports team on TV, shooting pool or just hanging out with other guys. Consequently, we have the “man cave“, a designated area of the home that specifically caters to the needs or hobbies of men. Where men can enjoy some alone time while taking a break from the daily routine or the stresses of everyday life. For many, the “man cave” has become an essential part of the home.
Space is key when deciding on the type of furnishing and entertainment you will have. Not all homes or apartments have basement spaces or spacious spare rooms to make a large man cave. Space can sometimes be limiting, but that doesn’t mean that your experience can’t be enjoyable.
The first and most significant thing you need to do is determine the function of your man cave. Will you be using it solely for entertainment and will you want to be able to serve drinks or light snacks in it? Do you plan on using it for playing video games? Will it be a multipurpose man cave or do you just want to stick with a limited number of activities? Being clear on the purpose of the room will help you decide on the design, layout, theme and even the materials and finishes that you will be needing to complete the project.
Next, what’s your style? Unlike other areas of the house, a man cave does not have to conform to the prevailing style of your home. You can design it independently based on its intended purpose since man caves are secluded areas which are typically located in basements, garages, attics or a spare room in the house.
The style can be traditional, transitional, contemporary or modern. The theme, on the other hand, pertains to the concept of your man cave. For example, if you are a sports enthusiast, a good theme for a man cave will be a sports bar. If you are a gamester, your theme would be a variety of games such as pinball machines, video games, and billiards. While a musician may want posters of their favorite bands, different instruments displayed and of course a room designed with perfect acoustics.
Once you have figured out the purpose and the type of man cave you want to achieve, it is time to decide on the layout. A layout pertains to how furniture pieces are arranged in the space. It involves placement of your seating, cabinetry, tables, recreational systems, etc. The layout of the man cave depends on the shape and size of the room. An ideal way to proceed with your layout is to create a simple floor plan of the area and explore possible layouts that you could use.
Now Personalize! Your man cave is a direct reflection of your hobbies and interests. Make sure to add your personality to your decor. Decorate your man cave with items that make you happy! Bring in a comfortable chair so you can relax; install lighting that works with the theme of your man cave. This is your own private retreat – don’t hold back.
